Webinar: Israeli bonds and the Central Bank
29 May 2025
On Monday, 26th of May, Financial Justice Ireland hosted a panel discussion on the Central Bank of Ireland’s continued regulation of Israel’s government bonds. The webinar was facilitated by Vicky Donnelly, Financial Justice Ireland's Education and Outreach Worker.
Israeli ‘war bonds’ play a direct role in funding the genocide in Gaza. The Central Bank has provided a gateway into the EU for Israel’s bonds. This raises very serious questions in relation to potential complicity of the Irish Central Bank in upholding the Israeli apartheid system and the genocide of the Palestinian population of Gaza.
Three brilliant panelists joined us to explore this topic:
Dr John Reynolds - an Associate Professor at the School of Law & Criminology in Maynooth University. His research focuses on questions of international law in relation to colonialism, racism/apartheid, states of emergency, and political economy. John's book on Empire, Emergency and International Law (Cambridge University Press) was awarded the Kevin Boyle Book Prize for Outstanding Legal Scholarship. He is an editor of the Third World Approaches to International Law Review (TWAIL Review) journal.
Helen Mahony - a member of the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign and co-ordinator of the IPSC Stop Funding Genocide Campaign. A member of Trade Union Friends of Palestine and TUI, former teacher and coordinator of BCFE - Evelyn Hone College, Zambia partnership.
Senator Alice-Mary Higgins - a progressive Independent Senator with over two decades of experience in policy, advocacy, and legislation across the areas of equality, environment, human rights, and social inclusion. An effective Legislator with a proven track record in the Seanad.
